While some of our Year 6's were experiencing life at Emrys, those who were left planned, filmed and edited a series of promo videos for the school. The day was a little overcast to begin with but as you will see the sun came out and helped the children create some fantastic videos showing off the school and its wonderful grounds.

AUTUMN TERM 2018

Welcome back everybody!  I hope you have had a good restful half term break and are ready for some good hard graft. We shall be continuing with our Topic of  'To there and back again' which will cover the aspect of journeys. This will include journeys taken by famous people, those done for religious purposes and eventful journeys like the Titanic. Our class book is called 'Then' by Morris Gleitzman and is the story of two children called Felix and Zelda who are on a journey of their own to escape from the Nazis in  war torn Poland. It is a very funny and yet sad book which children of previous years have loved.

It's going to be a busy term especially with Christmas on the horizon. Hopefully it will be a full and fun packed time.

Homework Tuesday 4th July

Please could you find out about Fibonacci in nature. This sequence which we have encountered in maths appears many times in the natural world. For example sunflower heads grow in a Fibonacci sequence as do pine cones. Find pictures and explanations about how why this sequence appears so frequently.

Maths homework is on rotational symmetry. (Manga High and on paper).

Tuesday 27th June.

Our focus for the week is shape and so I would like you to construct a 3D shape using only pencil and ruler on a piece of card. Remember that you will have to decide how many faces you will need and the length of these. Remember to include tabs in order for your shape to fit together properly.

If you are having problems you can go any maths website to see how your net should look before you construct!!

Homework Tuesday 16th May

Please could you find out about the discovery of chocolate. Who discovered it and where and how it became to be the product it is today. There is a lot of information on the Cadbury website, which is easy to follow and not too wordy. As with other homeworks you can include drawings, maps and pictures. Please dont 'regurgitate' information from the internet, but rather put it into your own words. 

Maths this week is on angles. Challenges have been set on Manga High but for those who haven't managed to get on the site, paper homework will be provided.

Homework, Tuesday June 20th

Can you find about the life cycles of different animals. How long do they live? Does the size of the animal dictate how long it lives? The larger the animal the longer it lives and the smaller, the shorter life span it has? Find out also using the same animals you have chosen to investigate their reproductive habits. How long do they carry their young for and how many do they have. Do the ones who have single offspring live longer than those who have multiple offspring?? See if you can draw some conclusions??

www.kidszone/lifecycle of animals is a good website to look at.

Maths work is on adding and subtracting fractions.(Manga High)

OR paper homework will be provided.

Homework Tuesday 2nd May

Please can you design your very own chocolate bar. You will have to think of a name, and think about what type of chocolate it is. Is it a sold bar? Are they small chocolate sweets? Is the bar filled with anything? You will have to come up with a catchy name and think how the wrapper/bag for your confection looks.

In addition to this I would like you to devise a two line jingle to go with your new chocolate design. A jingle is a two line usually rhyming couplet that aims to promote your chocolate product.

For example:

 

"A Mars a day

Helps you work, rest and play"

 

Something like that.

Once you have designed your product, you can try to make the packaging using appropriate materials.

This week’s homework is to create an 8 frame cartoon strip of the Easter Story.

The focus for Math’s will be Pie Charts. Tasks have been set on Manga High and also in paper form.

Please can you find out about the following:

  • Southern and Northern Hemispheres. 
  • The equator
  • The tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. 
  • Name 5 countries that lie in each of the Hemispheres. 
  • Name 5countries that lie along the equator
  • Lines of latitude and longitude. 
  • The prime meridian. 

What happens to time as you travel east of the Prime Meridian and what happens to time as you travel west?

Homework Tuesday 14th March

Please could you find out about Percy Shaw and his invention of cat's eyes.  Find out about how the invention came about and how he managed to get the idea put into production. Again you can use pictures to support your research.

Maths this week will focus on weight and measure. The work on Manga High is really good and covers a lot of measure units so I would encourage you to tackle a couple there. However if that is not possible I will provide worksheets for you to complete.

Homework 7th March

Please could you find out about the use of periscopes throughout history. Why they were used and how.  There are many images of people using them during wartime.  Gather as much information as you can, ready to share with the class next week when hopefully, we will have made our own!! 

Maths will concentrate on function machines and working out the formula.

Homework February 28th

Please could you find out about James Cracknell and Ben Fogle's race to the South Pole.

I would like you to find out about:

  • the distance they had to cover
  • the temperatures they had to endure
  • the food they had to eat
  • the amount of time they skied
  • how they carried their equipment/supplies
  • who their great rivals were
  • what effect the race had on their bodies
  • the injuries/illnesses they had to suffer
  • the time it took them to finish the race
  • There is a great article from the Telegraph called the Big Chill and this will contain most of what you need.

Maths homework for those doing Manga High and paper maths will be  number sequences and finding the nth term.

Homework to be in by Friday of this week.

Homework Tuesday 14th February 

Please can you find out about how light reflects off different surfaces. Flat,  shiny, opaque,  bumpy,  jagged etc.  You can use diagrams to help you.  Also can you find out what happens to light when it hits water.  Does the light beam change at all? Can you tell me what 'refraction' is? 

 

Find out as much as possible and again, use pictures and diagrams to help you explain.  

 

Maths will focus on Data Handling and time which will be set up for you on Manga High. This will run over half term aswell.

Homework Tuesday 7th February

 

Could you please find out about how different animals see.  Some have excellent night vision, some see using ultra violet.  Find out about how their eyes function and why.  How are they adapted to their environment? Compare this to human eye sight and what problems we can have.  For example,  I need to wear glasses.  Why? You can include diagrams and sketches to support your research. 

 

Maths homework this week will be Data Handling on Manga High.  You will need to visit the site at least 3 times during the week. 

 

Homework due in for Friday.  

THIS HOMEWORK WILL BE USED AS A BASIS FOR WORK IN CLASS SO IT IS IMPORTANT YOU HAVE IT TO REFER TO DURING LESSONS.

Homework 30th January

Your homework this week is to find out about the five pillars of Islam and in particular the Hajj,  which is the pilgrimage all Muslims must take once in a lifetime.  This will support our theme of 'Journeys'. The information gathered will be used to construct a non chronological report in class so the notes will need to accurate and not sketchy! You can draw or find pictures also. 

There are many great websites such as www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk or www.muslimkids.co.uk or you can go the BBC website.

Homework 24th January

The focus for homework this week is rivers.   I would like you to find out facts about river features.  To do this you will have to watch a selection of videos on the website 3d Geography.  The answers to the questions will be found there! ! The videos are in the form of short clips and you will be supplied with an answer sheet to put your findings down. 

This work will form part of the Topic lesson next week and so will have to be handed in on Friday.

I would like you to research a bridge within Wales. Find out the following:

  • Which gap does it span
  • Which company designed it
  • How long it took to build it
  • What type of bridge it is
  • What materials were used to build it
  • How much did it cost to build
  • Can you make a mini-model of it?

Again, as last week please DO NOT just print off pages from the Internet but put into your own words. Pictures are great but you don't need reams of them!

Thanks to those who brought in information about the Titanic. It has kick started our theme of journeys off really well. 

 

 

Homework Tuesday 10th January

As our Topic is Journeys and Travel, we will be studying famous journeys through History. Home work will now take the form of gathering information in readiness for specific work in class.

This week I would like the children to research the sinking of the Titanic in preparation for work in class.

In particular I would like them to find out the following:

When and from where the Titanic sailed.

Where she was built.

How many passengers she was allowed to carry.

How passengers were classed.

How much it would have cost to sail on the Titanic.

How she was viewed by the media at this time.

Why she sank. (There are various reasons for this)

Where in the Ocean she sank.

How long it took her to sink.

How many passengers survived? How many perished. What class of passenger were these?

How the media reacted to the tragedy.

Their work can take the form of notes, but please not information copied from the internet and so therefore in their own words. They can print out pictures of bring in books from home with articles about the Titanic in them.

 

All Maths homework from now on, can now be done on Manga High. Tasks will be set to consolidate work that has been studied during the week.
